Abstract:To clarify the current application status and existing problems of road flower border plants in the urban area of Chenzhou,this study aims to a practical basis for the standardized construction of flower borders in small and medium-sized cities in the southern Hunan and central China regions. A survey was conducted on 15 flower borders 5 main roads in Chenzhou City. Combining literature review, two consecutive years of field tracking surveys, data statistics, and semi-quantitative evaluation methods, the study systematically analyzed the composition, life forms, application frequency,germplasm sources,and landscape quality of the flower border plants. The survey results showed that a total of 117 plant species were in the area,belonging to 55 families and 98 genera,with perennial flowers (47.86%) and shrubs (27.35%) being main types;the homogenization of plant application was prominent,with 17 high-frequency plants such as Ligustrum lucidum dominating,while 48 low-frequency plants a weaker landscape contribution;exotic species and horticultural varieties accounted for 76.07%,while the proportion of native plants was relatively low,at only 23.9%;there were as many as 58 summer-blooming plants,but only 2 winter-blooming plants,resulting in a three-month gap in flower viewing;landscape quality of flower borders was greatly constrained by site spatial conditions,with a stark contrast in landscape between newly built main roads and branch roads in the old urban area,showing an overall development. Currently,road flower borders in Chenzhou face a series of problems such as an unreasonable species application structure,insufficient exploration of native plants,imbalanced seasonal color creation,an imperfect management and maintenance system. In response to the above problems,it is recommended to establish a native plant resource system,construct low-maintenance long-term plant configuration schemes,a zoned and classified construction model,and improve the normalized maintenance and management system,to help create urban road flower borders that highlight the regional characteristics of the Nanling Mountains and balance ecological with economic applicability.
