Abstract:In order to find out the resource status of ancient tree communities in Hubei Province, the species, quantity, distribution and growth status of ancient tree Communities in Hubei Province were investigated by means of data collection and on-site supplementary investigation. There were 473 ancient tree communities in Hubei Province with 15015 ancient trees, belonged to 121 species, 77 genera and 37 families. The main species of the ancient tree communities were Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Pinus massoniana, Osmanthus fragrans and Ginkgo biloba. The ancient tree communities were distributed mainly in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Huanggang City, Suizhou City and Xianning City, with the distribution pattern was mainly centralized and supplemented by sporadic distribution. The growth state of ancient tree communities in Hubei Province was mainly good, but it was also endangered by such factors as poor site conditions, pests and diseases, human and animal damage and natural disasters. It is suggested that protection and utilization of ancient tree communities should carried out to strengthen publicity, implement responsibility system of management and protection, strengthen study on protection and utilization of ancient tree communities, integrate ancient tree communities into holistic tourism strategy, complete protection and utilization planning of ancient tree communities in Hubei Province.
