Hubei Province, situates in transitional zones between South and North China along the middle reach of Yangtze River, has long been enjoying the prestige of "a province with a thousand lakes" and "a land flow with milk and honey" due to rich wetland resources.The total area of wetland is 161.7 hm2 including plain wetland and sub-alpine wetland. Hubei Province is the important breed place, migrate place and stop-over place in winter because of good habitats and abundant wetland biology resources. There are 126 species of water birds of 58 genuses of 19 families of 7 orders in Hubei and 231 species in China. In which 20 species were in the national protected bird and 18 species are provincial protected bird. The author describes the water bird biodiversity, population quantity, eco-distribution and puts forward the accordingly conservation countermeasures.
